Ais Kacang x IDD 2018
Ais Kacang x IDD 2018 is a collaboration project between final year BGDSHU and BIDSHU students. The aim is to present a Malaysian dish, Ais Kacang, and visualize it for a far future. Our group consists of 7 students, 2 from BGDSHU and 5 from BIDSHU. We decided to tackle on overpopulation and how it contributes to pollution. But first, take a look at the team :
After forming our group, we began brainstorming on ideas on how to have a presentable Ais Kacang. We had so many meetings, that it is hard to count the number of times. But our meetings are never dull, cause we always crack jokes and laugh at it for hours. Just look at us here :
But anyway, during the discussion, while we ate our lunch, we started to think of how an Ais Kacang would look like in the future after overpopulation have taken over. Our vision of the situation is that resources would be limited and people would fight each other to obtain their needs. Blood will shed! So, once that discussion was done, we individually started sketching our own ideas to see which would suit the best. In the end, we decided to use back everyone’s sketch by merging it into one. Voila :
We then had our interim presentation to pitch our idea. We volunteered Emma to be our presenter as we felt she had extremely good presenting skills. This is our presentation slides :
After sketching, we started planning out our materials and where to get them. Everyone had to get different items. For me, it was acrylic, watercolour, brushes, Chinese ink, and a palette. We gathered together outside of the Mezzanine Floor on Thursday to start our masterpiece. Take a look at us here enjoying ourselves while making our Ais Kacang :
We really enjoyed ourselves while building the prototype. After building the prototype, Pavitra and I designed the presentation boards for our final presentation. Below are how our boards look like :
On presentation day, we asked Emma to present for us again, after her wonderful presentation during the interim. We brought in our prototype to show our lecturers the outcome of the project. This is us after our presentation with our Ais Kacang :

My Reflection :
-
I enjoyed my time in this group
-
We had good communication skills when speaking to one another
-
We support one another during the project and make sure each contributed something
-
Overall, it was a well accomplished project and I had lots of fun

I Won’t Be Silent
I Won’t Be Silent is the first client project of the semester. My first client is Ms Ker Shin and Ms Adelle from Student Services Department (SSD) of INTI International College Subang. The project is about bullying among the staffs and students of INTI.
What are the objectives?
-
The power of word
-
Bystander impact
-
Prevention
Target Audience?
-
Primary : Students
-
Secondary : Staff
Requirements?
-
Campaign
-
Creative outcomes : Visible, Attractive, Interactive, Impact
The Don’ts :
-
Touch on religion
-
Touch on race
-
Sexual contents
-
Revealing victims (name, information, a photograph)
Some of my research: Bullying does not happen only in schools. It happens in the real world, between staffs, co-workers, and even world leaders. It is also common here in Malaysia. While physical bullying was common years ago, at the moment, verbal and social bullying is on the rise. Especially among students, places where they have 24 hour contact and lack adult supervision is the hot spots, such as boarding schools.
Forms of bullying:
1) Physical
- A form of bullying where the victim is physically disturbed, and beaten.
- The intention here is to hurt someone’s body and/or possessions.
- Types: stealing, shoving, hitting, fighting, and destroying property.
- Can be individual or group at times.
2) Verbal
- Conducted by speaking.
- Types: calling names, spreading rumours, threatening somebody, and making fun of others.
- The main weapon in verbal bullying is the bully’s voice, using it to intimidate the victim.
3) Cyber-bullying
- A form of bullying done behind the screens.
- The intention is to use the online freedom to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person.
- Common sites/apps used: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat.

Since the meeting with our client, my group, which consists of Madelyn, Neesa, Phoebe, and myself started to have group discussions to come out with a basic concept of the project. We each proposed a project that we would do to make it an interactive package. Phoebe would do an interactive poster, Neesa would do a ballot box, Madelyn would do an interactive sticker piece, while I would do an interactive tree.
For my interactive tree, I wanted to convey a message to the victims of bullying that there is always hope, that there are people out there who can give them a helping hand. This is why I decided to name my tree the "Tree of Hope.” This is my sketching process:
After each of us had done our part, we got together to discuss and plan our interim presentation for our clients and lecturers. This is our presentation slides:
And this is us during presentation day, while we were presenting, Ms Tong Yin took a picture of us:
After we proposed our ideas to our clients, and got approved (after answering all their burning questions and doubts), we started to make prototypes of each of the interactive work. To freshen up, the interactive work consists of:
1) Poking heart poster (Phoebe)
2) Ballot box (Neesa)
3) Stickers scenario (Madelyn)
4) Tree of Hope (Naveen: Me)
Each individual was in-charged of their own project. I started to make my Tree of Hope using mounting board and paster colours. The cutting process was incredibly hard, there was so many twists and turns for the tree branches, and I have to alternate between blade and scissors.
Once I finished painting and cutting, I had to construct the tree. There’s 4 parts of the tree for stability purpose. Constructing was quite irritating cause the amount of UHU glue used irritated my fingers and destroyed the corners of the board. I than did some cut-outs using coloured paper to make leaves that would represent the “hope messages” that people would stick onto the tree. Stay tuned for the finally outcome.
Once everyone had done their prototypes (stay tuned again, the final outcome will be revealed soon), we had to discuss our pitching for our clients. We reused the same slides for the pitching, but had our prototypes physically placed on the table for the clients to see. This is how our final prototype outcome looked like:
After our pitching, we learned that our group (Group 2) and Group 1 (which consists of Niki, Pavitra, and John) were chosen to work together for the actual final outcome of the project. Both of our ideas were combined, so we had to rethink what to use, how to use it, and even the colour scheme had to match each other’s project. We had a group discussion, and decided to keep:
1) Poking heart poster
2) Stickers scenario
3) ByStranger game (This game is Group 1’s idea)
However, we also had to discuss on how our ideas would work. We decided to rework on the works. My group had a meeting among ourselves to discuss how to further develop our projects. With discussions from our clients, they preferred if the poking heart poster would be an actual 3D heart suspended from the ceiling for people to poke, while the stickers, they prefer if it was as big as a wall. So, Madelyn would handle the sticker wall while the rest of us started to plan on making the 3D heart. At the same time, Group 1 would plan out their ByStranger game and would regularly update us their progress.
Before we started making the 3D heart, I planned out the layering and structure of the heart so that the making-process would be easier.
Once I had planned the measurements and all, we started to make the heart. Take a look at our process:
After we completed making the heart, I got the updated progress from Madelyn about the sticker wall project and the ByStranger project from Group 1. We than had to do another round of pitching, where we pitched the projects once again, this time with the actual items, locations that we planned to put, and other detailed things. So, the group decided to create another presentation slide.
Once we showed the process, we learned that there was a problem with the sticker wall project, and that we were no longer allowed to sticker it on the wall. So, we proposed to stick on a notice board instead and place it near the booth for the ByStranger game.
Alright, now it’s time for a brief explanation of each of the projects and how it’s executed on event day.
1) ByStranger Game
The ByStranger Game is like “The Amazing Race” where participants have to run around campus looking for items. In order to teach and show them that bullying does happen in college, 5 clay models and a few set of stickers of 5 characters is created and placed around the college. What participants would do is they have to take pictures of all clay models and stickers, and than post in on Instagram for verification purpose. The first team that returns to the booth that is set up at the lobby of the campus, wins.
2) Power of Words (renamed from Poking Hearts)
Power of Words is using the 3D heart suspended from the ceiling. The aim of this activity is to make students and staff interact with the heart by following the instructions provided. What they would be doing is, they will poke a hole through the heart and than retrieve a message from the box provided. The message would read “What's done cannot be undone” to say that when you bully someone, the impact stays forever. However, the heart was vandalised and we had to redesign the structure. We decided to just put the message around the heart and make the project more towards a “protest art."
3) Sticky Situation (renamed from Sticker Wall)
Sticky Situation, which is now on a notice board has the picture of bullies and victims, with a hero in the middle, standing out to help the victims. The aim is to make bystanders get involved by sticking stickers onto the hero to show support in helping the victims.
And, that’s it! The event was a huge success. Overall, we had a great time executing this project. Sure, yeah, there was fights, but we managed to get the job done. I really liked this project, it was quite different from the others.
