Ais Kacang x IDD 2018
Ais Kacang x IDD 2018 is a collaboration project between final year BGDSHU and BIDSHU students. The aim is to present a Malaysian dish, Ais Kacang, and visualize it for a far future. Our group consists of 7 students, 2 from BGDSHU and 5 from BIDSHU. We decided to tackle on overpopulation and how it contributes to pollution. But first, take a look at the team :
After forming our group, we began brainstorming on ideas on how to have a presentable Ais Kacang. We had so many meetings, that it is hard to count the number of times. But our meetings are never dull, cause we always crack jokes and laugh at it for hours. Just look at us here :
But anyway, during the discussion, while we ate our lunch, we started to think of how an Ais Kacang would look like in the future after overpopulation have taken over. Our vision of the situation is that resources would be limited and people would fight each other to obtain their needs. Blood will shed! So, once that discussion was done, we individually started sketching our own ideas to see which would suit the best. In the end, we decided to use back everyone’s sketch by merging it into one. Voila :
We then had our interim presentation to pitch our idea. We volunteered Emma to be our presenter as we felt she had extremely good presenting skills. This is our presentation slides :
After sketching, we started planning out our materials and where to get them. Everyone had to get different items. For me, it was acrylic, watercolour, brushes, Chinese ink, and a palette. We gathered together outside of the Mezzanine Floor on Thursday to start our masterpiece. Take a look at us here enjoying ourselves while making our Ais Kacang :
We really enjoyed ourselves while building the prototype. After building the prototype, Pavitra and I designed the presentation boards for our final presentation. Below are how our boards look like :
On presentation day, we asked Emma to present for us again, after her wonderful presentation during the interim. We brought in our prototype to show our lecturers the outcome of the project. This is us after our presentation with our Ais Kacang :

My Reflection :
-
I enjoyed my time in this group
-
We had good communication skills when speaking to one another
-
We support one another during the project and make sure each contributed something
-
Overall, it was a well accomplished project and I had lots of fun

KLPAC

KLPAC is a collaboration project between graphic and interior design students with our client: Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC), in-collaboration with Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival (YSDAF) 2018. The project is to create a seating using waste materials only. Look below at the brief of the project:
In class, we are told to divide ourselves into groups of 7. Pavitra & I grouped with Andy, Karyean, Li Yin, Daniel, and Suyu from Interior Design. After forming our group, we had our first meeting to discuss our next step. We divided the team: one group would go for a site visit at KLPAC while another would do some research on different types of furnitures and materials that can be used.
Andy, Karyean, Li Yin, and Suyu went for the site visit at KLPAC to determine and overlook the surrounding area to decide where our furniture would be suitable to be placed.
While Andy, Karyean, Li Yin, and Suyu had their site visit, Daniel, Pavitra, and I did our own research behind the scenes at our own homes and prep for our next meeting to discuss KLPAC’s location and suitable materials for the project. In our next meeting, we discussed the research and ideas from each member of the team and tried to compromise with a final decision. But before that, lets take a look at everyone’s research & experimentation:
After that, Andy started to experiment the designs in SketchUp to see how it would visually look like. Below is his designs:
After confirming how we wanted the design to look like, Pavitra and I created the presentation slides for our interim presentation to flash out our idea to our lecturers Mr Sean and Mr Sufi. Below is the presentation slides:
Once we presented our work, we started to work on the furniture. Since our idea was most towards wood materials, we got recycled wood from a nearby factory with the help of Andy and the wood is transported to our Block Z workshop. We than decided the tasks equally so that the job can be done within 2 days.
The aim of the project: To create 6 identical chairs using wood.
The story behind the project: As KLPAC has gone through many kinds of disasters in the past, we want to show how KLPAC is now facing “ruins” problem, but is still standing strong, despite being forgotten.
The tasks:
1) Measuring the woods into different sets.
2) Drawing lines based on the measurements.
3) Cutting the woods based on the measurements.
4) Glueing the base of the chair simultaneously while woods being cut,
5) Glueing the sitting area of the chair simultaneously while woods being cut.
6) Glueing all parts together once each section is done.
First, Pavitra, Karyean, and I started to measure the woods before giving it to Liyin and Suyu to draw guide lines to prepare Andy to cut off the woods. Meanwhile, Daniel was glueing off the woods together to form the base and the seating area. Once the glue had dried, all of us work together in assembling the chair. The first chair was hard to assemble because we had to make a lot of trial and error, but the remaining 5 chair went smoothly.
Take a look at our time at the workshop here (Pavitra is behind the camera):
Once we finished assembling all 6 of the chairs, we placed it in the corner of the workshop and prepare for our final presentation with Mr Sean and Mr Sufi to explain the furniture. This is our presentation board:
After presentation, we had to start planning on how to transport the furniture to KLPAC without any damages. We decided to bubble wrap the furniture before loading it onto the lorry. Once at KLPAC, Andy, Pavitra, and I unloaded it from the lorry and we started to think of a place to set it up.
We initially though of putting the chairs in this area:
But since that area was going to be the stage, we had to relocate it to this area:
Overall, this project was a success and I had a great time executing this with my teammates.
What I loved about this project?
-
I got to collaborate with a different group of Interior designers.
-
I got to step out of my comfort zone, as making furnitures is not what I assumed graphic designers would do.
-
I loved that I got to collaborate with KLPAC to make their Art Festival a successful one.
Here’s a little bonus pictures of my friends and I attending the Yayasan Time Darby Arts Festival (YSDAF):
