Lighting Design

Lighting Design is another collaboration between Graphic Design students and Interior Design students. The aim of this project is to create a lighting which is usable for our upcoming graduation showcase. Each student is divided into groups of 5, which consists of 4 interior students and 1 graphic student. Take a look at the brief: (I didn’t have a good angle to take the picture at the time)

Since the brief is not too clear, here is a rundown of it:

- Students are supposed to create a lighting design using upcyling materials.

- The lighting has to be the actual size for display.

- It has to represent the graduation showcase theme: DAZE.

- Supported with an A2 presentation board.

After the briefing, I ended up with Andy, Karyean, Jason, and Daniel for this project. After forming our group, we started to discuss about our project. First, I explained to the others the meaning behind DAZE, the concept, its colours and hidden meanings before we started to discuss on the lighting’s concept. We wanted to some kind of kaleidoscope effect with the looks of a telescope. Take a look at some of the examples found online:

With these references, we discussed on different ways to present the design and how to modify it to look and fit the DAZE theme. We thought to have different designs at the slot area to have different lighting vibes each time it is shine. We also thought of doing the lighting for a photobooth at the showcase. Here are some sketches of our development stage before we prep for our interim presentation which will decide the next stage of this project.

After all the discussions and planning, we did a prototype of the light for the presentation. Once the prototype was done, we discussed on how the presentation was going to go. We decided to have Andy represent the group as he was the one that came up with the idea, and has better knowledge around the concept of the lighting.

After the presentation, we started to make the lighting.

After building the light, this is how the final outcome looks like:
